PostSubject: 24hr Daytona   Sat 10 Dec 2016, 1:59 am

Well guys, I decided to buckle down and do some serious tuning for the race next month. Spent about 2 hours tonight in private testing sessions and hosted lobbies. I wasted about 45 minutes tuning the gt2 version of the Ford gt. Pretty sure it's the gt3 variant of the car in the list, as it isn't released yet though, I am not sure. Anyways, I turned 1:47.x on the baseline tune. Then went to making some minor changes and managed 1:46.5's on average. Finally though after some really picky tweaking, I pulled a couple 1:45.9's. That is, by my best guess, about 3 to 3 and a half seconds off of the top guys. And that's if the ruf and Audi or merc aren't turning better times right now.

The car still needs some work overall and the biggest issue at the moment is putting the power down leaving the last turn from the infield back into the banking. First gear is too much torque and second gear is underpowered until you hit the power band, this car is very peaky on the power. There isn't much tuning by way of the diff. Only option is the preload and I have it pretty open at the moment so I am at a loss for the night in how to get it to hook. I've played with tire pressure and camber and they seem to be spot on, according to the telemetry. Also played around with the damping, springs, and arb, and they also are pretty well balanced. The car turns in great and holds the corner very nicely. Its the laying the power down that is the issue.

Let me know when is good for y'all and maybe I can throw a private lobby up for us to try out the tune as is and see what we can come up with together. After all, I won't be the only one behind the wheel. Its gonna be a demanding race and after the turn out for le mans last month (468 teams!) I want us to be as ready as we can be. It'll be a good chance for us to see what each of us like and don't like about the tune and find a good balance that all of us are comfortable with over that long of a race. Its our first attempt at an endurance race so I am not expecting a win, but I want us to at least last the full 24. Can't do that with a car no one can drive.

Let me know when works for y'all and we can figure out the best time to run a couple practice lobbies. Once I get a cool paint job on it I'll post a couple shots. Suggestions are welcome, and yes Jay Dee, I know you want the chive in there. But right now I'm going to bed. Its too damn late to do anything useful now.

Haha.....sorry I'm obsessed, and its a problem, I know. Smile

Thanks for getting to work on the tune. I'd offer some advice but I'm more of a Cole Trickle "whats the difference, they told me to get in the car and drive" kind of tuner.

Monday's are a pretty good night for me practice wise. I will certainly need the practice. I'm happy to throw up some lobbies too.

Who all do we have on the team so far?

Far as I know it's you, me, and Roca. I was thinking about talking to some other guys I have talked to in lobbies before and see if they want some seat time. I'll talk to Roca and see if Monday works for him.

Are you sure the Ford GT is one of the cars that will be available?  The link below says Corvette DP, Audi R8 GT3, BMW Z4 GT3, or the Mercedes GT3.

That's the guy that I helped out earlier this year. We hosted a long beach race based on the imsa long beach grand prix. Cool guy. We had a pretty large field for that race too. Anyways, a staff member commented on that thread with the official car list, no Ford gt. So many hours wasted. I want to say it ran last year, maybe not.

Anyways, I guess I'll start on one of the other cars. I prefer the merc above the Audi but that's just me. I've had better luck tuning it and it sounds amazing. Plus now I know it will be night so that will help with getting the tune closer to something we can use.

How do you feel about the Mercedes?

Sounds good. I just talked to Roca and he is in too. I'm also going to see if robin (guy you just posted the link from) wants to join us. We have talked a few times about another one off event since long beach earlier this year. Maybe he will fill some drive time with us and make it a little easier. I'll let you know what he says. But for now, sleep, early one again tomorrow.

Quick update on tune:

I did lower the downforce Roca and that works a little better. The kink in the infield is the only place I notice a difference. We will now need to lift slightly going through there. Whatever you do, don't get too much of the rumble strip. Overall the car still feels stable (to me) and my lap times have come down about a quarter second. Average lap time during my session today was 1:46.1 and fast lap was 1:45.8. Still not too tier times but I suck so there's that. That was with no draft from another car. Race pace times I'm sure will be much quicker. Anyways, I think Roca you already have the tune and I will get it to you Jay Dee as soon as I can. I'm sure I'll make a few minor adjustments over the next month but this seems to be all I have.

Further updates to come as I get feedback from you guys. Also I have started looking for a 4th driver to help fill some seat time.

Another quick update here on the tune. I haven't touched it since last go round of tuning. Hopped on for a few quick laps tonight on a dynamic weather session. It gave me pretty much the worst session it could. Temp was 69 degrees, track was 69 degrees, sky was clear as could be, and it even threw in high humidity and light fog, all obviously set at night. Needless to say the track was very cold, tires would not hold their heat, and it was SLICK. Managed to start the session running 48 second laps, after about 4 laps I began to push the car a little, started clicking off low 46s. Not bad for a cold, damp track that is coated with a little fog. Not to mention im running all of this through a RGB cable so graphic quality sucks at the moment.

On a side note, the paint is pretty much done. I finished it off before the test session. I'll post pics next time I run a test. We need to get a time to run some laps this week so everyone can try out the latest version of the tune. You said Monday's for you jay dee, does tomorrow work? Its my only day off during the holidays until Jan 2nd. If so I'll give roca a shout and we can turn some laps together.

We still planning on running this weekend? Want to set up a practice one night this week?

I did the Roar on Friday night in the Miata. Finished 7th of 16 in class and 29th of 52 overall. Got a good feel for thexample track though.

That should be fine. If anyone wants to go a little later, I'll set up another one.

We may want to work out a schedule of stints too. What were you thinking, maybe 2 hours? I guess it would depend on how long we can go on fuel.

Yeah I was gonna go ahead and do all that first thing when we joined. Yeah it's wide open a lot every lap here. I don't know if we'll be able to pass over the hour mark running that much throttle each lap. Even on map 3 it will still use a lot of fuel. Anyways, we can figure all that out tonight. See you then.

Just did some more testing, but ran engine map 1 this time, to see what lap times we can run while saving fuel. I am turning anywhere from 47.1 to 47.4 in fuel save mode. Car is pretty stable, there's a few spots more downforce would be good but it'll slow down the overall lap. Just got be easy on the throttle. Especially in a cold track. The session I am in is 77 degree track temp.

Can I switch those last two stints on Sunday with someone? My wife has to go to New York Sunday morning, and I'll be tied up with my son. Anything before 5am I'm good, but she leaves at 5 and I'm on duty.

Josh Yu did some extensive fuel testing and found that map 2 gets much better lap times and doesn't use much more fuel than map 1. Also we need to update schedule to say 55 min to 1 hour per stint. That's all he could get out of a stint. Not an hour ten.
